Since we all are familiar with Social Networking websites, this is an easy topic to understand even if you don’t know anything about web hosting. Popular social networking websites such as hi5 and Facebook use image hosting technologies to make their sites more attractive to users. Unlike video hosting, image hosting does not require high end server hardware and a lot of bandwidth. Of course, this needs a good bandwidth as images are transferred here and there but less than what videos need. Let’s look at image hosting in little detail.

Image hosting services allow internet users to upload their images and share among the other users using a web application. Most image-formats are usually supported for uploading but the policy for image formats vary from one service provider to other. Once the images are uploaded in to the server, they are stored in special ways, some time with additional Meta data for fast retrieval. All the image-hosting services provide users an interface for uploading the images. But the number of images that can be uploaded at once and the sizes of the images have restrictions especially if the service is a free service. This is mainly due to the bandwidth and storage cost. Once your image files are uploaded to the server, you can refer your pictures from any web page by embedding an HTML code. When the users of your web page load the page into their web browser, a copy of your image will be pulled out from the original hosting server.

If you are a graphics designer and wish to have a hosting place for your image on the internet, there are so many free or cheap service providers. But if your work consists of large file sizes and they are accessed frequently, you may have to consider buying a package which will have more storage and bandwidth. Image hosting service providers facilitate users with a variety of tools for managing uploaded images such as resizing, thumbnail generation, adding custom tags for images, emailing images from camera phones etc. If you are very keen on image sharing, visit Flicker and enjoy sharing!
