If you are a serious gamer and into all sorts of new computer games, you should have probably played games online. Yes, it’s fun to play games online as you compete with different people with different gaming skills. But have you ever thought about how this online gaming mechanism work and what does it mean by “Gaming Server”? Ok, let’s talk about types of game servers and game server hosting.

Game servers basically act as the hub for online gamers. Imagine if you want to play a game online. It means you have a multi-player game installed and you would like to play that game with a larger community of gamers. For this you need to have an internet connection with a higher bandwidth. You need to configure your game settings so it can connect to the game server online. This is what happens at other games’ end as well. So, you all are connecting via the game server so you all can play your preferred game.

There are two types of game servers as Listen servers and Dedicated servers. Listen servers run in the same physical machine (PC) as the game client runs. Let’s take an example; imagine you play Delta Force – Black Hawk Down. You have few PCs in your home or wherever and they are interconnected through a LAN. The game can be installed in every PC of the network and one can start the game and become the game host. Yes, in this person’s PC, there is a listen server running alongside with his game, so others can connect to his server and play the game together. There is a demographic limitation for listen server usage due to PCs processing power and the limitation of LAN.

Dedicated servers are run on dedicated hardware with high capacity processors and bandwidth. Also, they are maintained in places such as data centers. Anyone who has sufficient bandwidth can connect to these game servers for playing online games.

Many hosting companies now lease dedicated game servers out for a monthly or annual fee. Game Server Providers (GSP) usually offers many popular games especially first person games for the players.
