In modern days, electronics play a vital role in our lives even though electronics started as a part of theoretical physics. From the early days to now, the progress electronics have made within a short period of time is much higher than any other in the field of science. In this short article, I’m trying to give you a brief overview of electronics and introduce you the types of circuits.
In electronics, the flow of charge through various materials such as semiconductors, resistors, inductors etc. is studied. Even though electronics started as a part of theoretical physics, it is more practical than any other part of physics. Electronics is also studied in the fields of Electronic Engineering and Computer Engineering. But in our article, we focus only on the engineering aspect of it. There are two main uses of electronic circuits.
1. The processing and controlling of data
2. The controlling and distribution of power.
Mainly there are three types of electronic circuits that can be found in any general electronic device. These three categories are differentiated based on which types of electronic signals are used for processing. The first and oldest type is Analog circuits. Before the world was concurred by other types of circuits a few generations of men lived more satisfyingly with analog circuits where they were widely used from radios to space shuttles. These analog circuits were built as a combination of few basic circuits. Analog circuits use a continuous range of voltage as opposed to two distinct levels of digital circuits. Analog circuits are also, sometimes called linear circuits.
The digital circuits are operated by number of discrete voltage levels. Nowadays almost all electronic devices are made of digital circuits. There are two distinct voltage levels in digital world called “High” and “Low”. All electronic signals are made of series of High and Low voltage levels creating different patterns of voltage. This pattern is then understood by other devices and interpreted correctly. There are number of building blocks in digital world. Some of them are Logic gates, Adders, Counters, and Registers etc. Any of the digital devices that you use are made of these basic components.
The third type is Mixed-signal circuits. These have the best of both above types integrated. These are also called Integrated Circuits (ICs) and are becoming common in electronics world. They are often used for controlling analog devices using digital logic. An electric turbine would be a good example for this.
